  • Spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Magnetic Project Mat (recommended for organizing screws)

Tip: Before starting, disable your MacBook’s Auto Boot feature if possible. For macOS Big Sur v11.1 or later, Auto Boot may not be entirely disabled, so proceed carefully and disconnect the battery immediately after opening the MacBook.

Preparation

  1. Power Off Your MacBook: Shut down your device completely and unplug it.
  2. Position Your MacBook: Close the display and flip the MacBook upside-down.

Step 1: Remove the Lower Case Screws

Using a P5 screwdriver, remove the ten screws securing the lower case:

  • Two 7.9 mm screws
  • Two 7.3 mm screws
  • Six 2.6 mm screws

Note: Keep track of each screw’s location to ensure proper reassembly.

Step 2: Remove the Lower Case

  1. Slide your fingertips between the lowercase and the screen.
  2. Pull upward to pop off the lowercase.
  3. Set it aside.

To Reinstall: Align the lowercase and press firmly until you hear the clips snap into place.

Step 3: Disconnect the Battery

  1. Take your spudger and pop up that metal latch on the battery connector.
  2. Lift the locking arm straight up to disconnect the battery.
  3. When reassembling, uniformly press the connector into the socket.

Step 4: Disconnect the Antenna Cables

  1. Use a Flathead screwdriver to remove the 1.4 mm screw securing the antenna cable cover.
  2. Remove the antenna cable cover.
  3. To disconnect, gently grasp each antenna connector close to its base with tweezers and pull straight up.

The connectors should be gently pressed straight down until they snap into place.

Step 5: Disconnect the Display Cable

  1. Take out the two tiny screws holding the display cable connector cover using the T3 screwdriver.
  2. Remove the cover.
  3. Carefully peel the display cable connector from the antenna board using the spudger.

Caution: Avoid pressing on the middle of the connector during reassembly to prevent pin damage.

Step 6: Remove the Antenna Bar

  1. Six screws holding the antenna bar in place can be removed using a T5 screwdriver:
    • Four 7.4 mm silver screws
    • Two 4.7 mm black screws
  2. Pry up each end of the antenna bar with a spudger.
  3. Thread the antenna board through the case’s aperture after removing the antenna bar.

Caution: Be mindful of the ribbon cables attached to the antenna bar.

Step 7: Remove the Display

  1. Unscrew the four screws from the display hinges (two per hinge) with a small Phillips-head screwdriver.
  2. Fully open the MacBook and carefully lift the upper case to access the hinges.
  3. Turn the MacBook on its side and remove the two remaining screws securing the display.
  4. Close the display to a ~90-degree angle and gently slide the hinges out of the case.
  5. Carefully detach the display from the upper case.
